Description

Pewter bottle closures from the 1622 ships consist of two parts - a base and a cap. The bases were fixed over the lip and mouth of glass bottles. These bases have threaded mouths that then formed the opening for the bottle. A true cap screwed onto the threaded base to close the bottle. Some of the caps are surmounted with a ring; some are not. A few of these pewter closures have the remains of the glass bottle necks protruding from their bases, showing that these caps were mounted on green-glass, square bottles. Though the general design and function is the same for all these pieces, there are variations in style and size. The bases range in diameter from 1.5 to 2.9cm.
