Description
This small, thick, 2-escudo gold coin was minted in Seville during the reign of King Philip III (1598-1621). The planchet has an uneven surface, and the impression of the die did not apply evenly, and the Hapsburg shield is incomplete. The Seville mintmark is not present, but the assayer’s initial “G” is impressed to the left of the shield. The reverse bears part of a cross potent surrounded by a tressure and floral elements. The letters “M • RE” of HISPANIARUM (Spain) REX (King) is all that survives of the legend. The piece was clipped along the edges to bring it to the proper weight for the denomination. The coin is 2.1 centimeters at its widest point, and it weighs 6.7 grams.
