Gudgeons and pintles are used as hinges and pivots in shipbuilding. The gudgeon has a sleeve for the pintle to insert into allowing the pintle to rotate within the gudgeon. These were made in different sizes and commonly used on rudders and gunport hatches. The benefit of them over traditional hinges is that they can be disassembled relatively easy. This allowed for hatches and even rudders to be replaced quickly.
