Description
The strip of folded lead with 2 encrusted iron tacks is thought to be a form of “parcelling,” the finishing element of a caulked plank seam. Once the seams between plank edges were stuffed with oakum and pitch, the lead strip, possibly in conjunction with cloth, was tacked on top to help seal the joint even further.
